The mussels are coming! The mussels are coming!

According to the Missoulian Newspaper, the Associated Press, and The Daily Interlake, "Preliminary testing has indicated that an aquatic invasive species may have moved into the Missouri River."

The Daily Interlake reports: "Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks spokesman Greg Lemon said Monday evening that a water sample taken from the York Islands fishing access south of Townshend was found to be “suspect” during initial testing by state scientists. He said additional testing is needed to confirm whether the sample contained larvae from zebra or quagga mussels, two species of invasive mussel known to multiply aggressively and generate costly damage to aquatic ecosystems and infrastructure."

The Daily Interlake also wrote: "The finding comes about two weeks after mussel larvae, known as “veligers,” were confirmed for the first time in Montana waters at Tiber Reservoir. Another sample taken from upstream in Canyon Ferry was inconclusive, but a visual microscopy test indicated the veligers were present in that water body as well."

In the words of Vice President Biden, "This is a big fucking deal!"  And it's a big deal, not only for the waters where the larvae may have been found, but for all the connected waters (ie. the Jefferson, Madison, Gallatin, Big Hole, Beaverhead and the Lower Missouri.  Not only that, but it will make spreading the larvae around the state of Montana via recreationists, that much easier.

"Stand up for the Beaverhead" - an op-ed by Wade Fellin of the Upper Missouri River Waterkeeper

Beaverhead River moose

There is a great op-ed in the Missoulian today from Wade Fellin, Program Director for the Upper Missouri Waterkeeper, Inc.  It is a call to action for the Beaverhead River's recent algae issues and is critical of the proposed hydroelectric use of the Clark Canyon Dam.

Harold's Club AKA "Milltown Union Bar" closes in Milltown

Harold's Club AKA "Milltown Union Bar" shut down in Milltown, Montana yesterday.  The place has been a blue collar bar for over 100 years.  There is a great Missoulian article in the paper today.

"Mine waste repository being built in Blackfoot headwaters"

This Missoulian article explains the movement of mine tailings from the Mike Horse Mine at the headwaters of the Blackfoot River to a repository being built near Lincoln.

I don't think most people know about the Mike Horse Mine, which constantly and eternally pukes acid mine drainage into the headwaters of the beloved Blackfoot River.  There is also a large earthen dam which is made from mine tailings.  Not only is the dam itself undergoing acid rock drainage (ARD), but the dam is susceptible to massive failure.  In the 70's after an intense rainstorm, the tailings dam blew out and a bunch of nasty, metal laden acid water washed downstream causing a MASSIVE fish kill.

By the 90's, when Robert Redford made A River Runs Through It, a movie based on Maclean's novella about a family who grows up fishing the "Big Blackfoot," the quality of the fishery was still recovering and he chose to shoot the entire movie on other streams.  None of the filming took place on the actual Blackfoot!

Anyway, you know I like to show pics of this stuff.  RBM Chronicles is your source for mine waste porn!
