Tonight at 6 pm, I will be giving a presentation on the fun, joys, and heartache of fly fishing for carp at the George Grant Chapter of Trout Unlimited Annual Meeting.  The presentation will start shortly after 6 and will be in the conference room.  Come have a beer and learn about one of the most underutilized and fantastic fishery in SW Montana!!

Congratulations to the George Grant Chapter of Trout Unlimited for their highly successful 2017 banquet.  Unofficial results show that this year's banquet may have had the largest turnout in Montana Trout Unlimited history!!

Take that Bozeman and Missoula!!  With all your population and money, you got beat by little old Butte!

George Grant Chapter of Trout Unlimited Banquet 2017

The George Grant Chapter of Trout Unlimited will be holding its annual banquet this Friday, March 3 in the same great place as last year, next to Jo-Anne Fabric in the Butte Plaza Mall.  There are a ton of really nice live and silent auction items, a great dinner catered by Casagranda's Steakhouse, a bunch of games and activities for children, beer and wine, and much, much more!

Come on down and help the coolest TU chapter with their main fundraising event.  I'll see you there!!

George Grant Chapter TU meeting/presentation this Thursday!

This Thursday, February, 14, the George Grant Chapter of Trout Unlimited is hosting its monthly meeting and a series of presentations by MT FWP Fisheries Biologist, Jim Olson.

This meeting will take place at 6:30 pm at the Quarry Brewing, 124 W. Broadway in Uptown Butte (in the old Grand Hotel).  I'm assuming that the meeting will take place upstairs.

FWP Fisheries Biologist Jim Olson will present a report on the Big Hole River fishery post-fungus and also on the discovery of PKD (the disease that closed the Yellowstone last year) in the Big Hole River.  Additionally, Olsen will give up some information on where to find hogs in our mountain lakes!

Governor Bullock and Butte come together to protect public lands

Montana Governor Steve Bullock speaks to a crowd about his efforts and promise to protect public lands and access.

The transfer of Federal land to the states and the protection of Montana's great Stream Access law have taken center stage in this election cycle.  Governer Bullock came to Highline park in Butte last Friday for a short rally.  Folks from the George Grant Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Highline Hunters and Anglers, other groups, and concerned citizens enjoyed a nice day in Butte and a visit from our most public lands freindly gubernatorial candidate.

"The George Grant TU Chapter’s Annual Meeting will be held from 6:30 to 8 pm on May 9th in the Perkins Family Restaurant & Bakery Conference Room, 2900 Harrison Ave, Butte MT.

The meeting will include a presentation by Jim Olson, FWP Fisheries Biologist on How Fish See and a report on the Big Hole River followed by Dave McCumber, Montana Standard Editor, describe how an effective cleanup of Silver Bow Creek can be achieved.

The Board of Directors will give a general Chapter report, treasurer report and hold an election of GGTU board members. The following Trout Unlimited members have been nominated to serve on the GGTU board for three-year terms: Rich Day, Paul Olson, Steve Luebeck and Scott Reynolds. Other nominations will be accepted at the meeting." - GGTU

"The Big Hole Watershed Committee and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks are in need of volunteers to  cut willow stakes for the French & Moose Creek restoration project area. BHWC, MFWP, and volunteers will meet:

The Moose Creek turnoff is located on Highway 569 (Mill Creek Road), the Scenic Byway between Highway 43 and Anaconda, MT.  Blue signs marked BHWC Restoration Tour will be visible. Please note, this is a volunteer field day, not a restoration tour. The French & Moose Creeks restoration project tour will be held later at a later date.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
Please bring sunscreen and loppers/cutters if available.

About the French & Moose Creeks Restoration Project:
The French & Moose Creeks restoration project will repair streams impacted by historic placer mining and smelting that occurred around the turn of the 20th century. The restoration will improve water quality & the fishery and will restore degraded wetlands. Willows cut in April will be planted in May/June. The French & Moose Creek project is a collaborative effort with several funding sources and nearly $1.3 million in funding secured."

George Grant TU banquet a great success!

Last night the George Grant Chapter of Trout Unlimited banquet sold out for the first time ever!  I'm so proud to have been a part of the historic turnout.  This year's location was very nice and very large, the food was great, and the prizes and auction items were unreal.  Go Butte!  Go GGTU!

I had a ton of fun seeing all the people that I have met over the past year in the coolest town in Montana.  It was very different from last year when I was the new guy in town.  I had to indulge in some silent auctioning this year as I was so broke last year, I could barely afford the banquet ticket.  I made out like a bandit!

Thanks to the guys and girls at GGTU, The Stonefly, Zip Trip, Restore Our Creek, and the many other individuals, businesses, and orgs. that made such a fun night happen.

The George Grant Chapter of Trout Unlimited's annual banquet is a mere 1 week away! This year, the event will be at the Butte Plaza Event Center 3100 Harrison Ave, in Butte, Montana.

Fly Fishing Film Tour in Butte this Thursday!!

The 2016 Fly Fishing Film Tour rolls through Butte, America this Thursday, Feb. 11!  The show is at the Motherlode Theater.  Doors open at 6 pm and the show starts at 7 pm.

Raffle tickets for the $7000 NRS raft w/ frame that will be given away at the George Grant TU banquet will be sold in the lobby.

The show is being sponserd by the Stonefly Fly Shop.

Bugs of the Big Hole

Michael Bias PhD. will be giving a presentation on the aquatic macroinvertebrates of the Big Hole River next Monday in Butte, Montana.  The Big Hole is a magical mystery and one of the finest trout streams anywhere.

Dr. Bias has been studied aquatic entomology, wetland restoration ecology, wildlife population and habitat ecology, for many years.  He is also a fishing guide.

Dr. Bias' presentation is on Monday, February 8th at 7 pm in Butte, Montana.  The event will be held in the Butte Local Development Center, 305 W Mercury (the old Boys Central Scool), on the second floor.

Southwest Montana fisheries improvement meeting on Monday in Butte

Next Monday, January 11th 2015, there is a public meeting to discuss the improvement of Southwest Montana fisheries. At 6:30 pm Ron Spoon, State Fisheries Biologist, will give a presentation on the Jefferson River Project, a restoration project which is helping make the Jefferson River into a world-class trout fishery. 

Also, Josh Vincent of Water and Environmental Technologies (WET), a local environmental engineering firm, will discuss how he, Pat Munday, and Steve Luebeck utilized a grant they received on behalf of the George Grant Chapter of Trout Unlimited which they used for habitat improvements on German Gulch, the most important tributary (for trout) to Silver Bow Creek. 

The meeting is at the Butte Business Development Center at 305 W. Mercury Street in Butte, Montana.  This is the old Boys Central School Building.

George Grant Chapter of TU will meet to discuss cleanup and restoration of Clark Fork R. and Silver Bow Cr. (updated)

The George Grant Chapter of Trout Unlimited is holding a Board of Directors meeting and the public is invited.  Some folks representing TU and the MT DOJ, as well as, Joe Griffin (retired MT DEQ hydrogeologist and all-around bad-ass) will be giving a presentation on the restoration and mine waste cleanup on Silver Bow Creek and the Upper Clark Fork River.

Updates:

• Casey Hackathorn of Trout Unlimited (national) will present on the Upper Clark Fork and its tributaries.
• Jason Lindstrom of MT FWP will present electro-fishing data from Silver Bow Creek.
• Pat Cunneen of the BNRC will likely present on efforts to remove the Parrot Tailings, Diggins East, and Northside Tailings from the banks of Upper Silver Bow Creek in Butte.

This is not one to be missed!!
